The name Charmeval is the fruit of our history. Founded in 1877, Maison Bruant is located in Ormes, in the former hamlet of Charmoy, in the heart of the Loire Valley. Charmeval is the combination of Charmoy and Val de Loire.
Maison Bruant has been in existence for almost 150 years, and after 5 generations we continue to renew ourselves to offer you exceptional spirits. The film reel represents our past, present and future history.
Our Master Blender Benoît Bruant's experience in wine and spirits distribution led him to create a whisky that is simple and accessible, with the aim of making whisky tasting accessible to all.
The story of Maison Bruant begins in 1877, in the heart of the French countryside. Désiré Bruant was a winegrower in Ormes, near Orléans. The village had just emerged from the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, when the Prussians and French fought fiercely. The village was in the midst of rebuilding when a violent epidemic devastated the crops: Phylloxera, a vine-destroying aphid.
Désiré saw his vineyard decimated in a few months. Faced with the lack of solutions and the irremediability of the situation, he decided to give up farming and redirect his efforts to the wine trade, founding the Bruant company in 1877. The business quickly became a must in the commune, renowned for its choice and the quality of the wines offered.
It benefits from an exceptional location. In the heart of the Beauce, a region of rich soil fed by the Loire, and close to the port of Orléans, a central place for the transport of wine from Burgundy upstream and from the Nantes and Saumur regions, Anjou and Touraine downstream.
In 1896, Désiré Bruant bequeathed his business and his passion to his son Maurice, who carried on the tradition through his son Marcel and then his grandson Michel. Each of the three generations had a decisive impact on the growth and renewal of the company, which enabled it to extend its reputation throughout the region.
In 1993 it was the turn of Benoît, son of Michel and great-grandson of Désiré, to take over the family business with his wife Isabelle. This was a pivotal period in the revolution of customs, consumer habits had changed a lot and new players were arriving on the market.
Benoît and Isabelle decided to respond to a growing demand for importing and distributing spirits in France. With a rich family history and an ardent passion for agriculture begun by Désiré Bruant, the Bruant family decided to create Charmeval, an exceptional French whisky.
Charmeval represents the perfect union between the history of the Maison Bruant and French agricultural know-how. The fruit of barley grown on the rich soil of our terroir, malted and then distilled in France, our whiskies derive their exceptionality from a unique maturation process. It took several years for our master maturer, Benoît Bruant, to find the perfect alliance between the subtlety of the cask and the robustness of the whisky to give our nectars unique flavors and optimal quality. After distillation, our whiskies are first aged in oak barrels, then matured for several months in 5 different casks:
These three unique finishes give the whisky a new identity and allow you to approach it more simply and easily. It is by making the most of its history and know-how that the Bruant House offers you the opportunity to discover 5 whiskies with new flavors that will allow you to simply approach an alcohol that is too often mystified.
The unique aroma of our whiskies is obtained through a process of aging in barrels of great French names, Banyuls, Bourgogne Blanc or Bourbon.
These finishes will allow you to apprehend the whisky under a singular angle, we advise you to taste our three whiskies to understand which one will correspond the best to your tastes.
Which emotions will you lean towards: delicacy, robustness, fire.
